What Is Laser Therapy for Pets?

Laser therapy has been used in human medicine for many years. Research has found that laser energy, when set to a very low frequency, can help to heal tissues deep within the body in a process called "photobiomodulation." In this process, the light stimulates body processes to produce essential natural chemicals that help to relieve pain and heal damaged tissue. This same technology is now used in veterinary medicine to help animals recover from accidents and various health-related issues.

What Conditions Can Laser Therapy Treat?

Laser therapy can be used for a number of pet problems. The technology can help to relieve post-surgery pain and promote the body's natural healing process. Laser therapy can also be used to facilitate healing in wounds from accidents or other injuries. It can help to reduce pain from arthritis. Laser therapy can also be used to aid nerve problems in animals. It can help boost immune system function. We also use laser therapy to heal troublesome skin conditions that don't respond fully to traditional methods.

How Is Laser Therapy Performed?

Laser therapy is done in our vet's office on a table or sometimes on a blanket on the floor. Generally, no sedation of the animal is necessary. During a session, the vet passes a hand-held device over the surface of the body where treatment is needed. The animal feels no pain or discomfort from the therapy. Sessions last a few minutes to one-half hour. After the session, your pet can continue its usual activities.
